Welcome to Centre Céramique

Centre Céramique is a multi-functional building located adjacent to Plein 1992, a large open square surrounded by magnificent views, cafés, and a short walk from the stylish shopping area of Wyck. Centre Céramique houses Maastricht City Library, various exhibition spaces, cultural heritage collections and a Coffeelovers café.

Maastricht City Library

The Stadsbibliotheek van Maastricht, or Maastricht City Library dates back to 1662 and it has been housed at various addresses in the city until it eventually found its current home in Centre Céramique. The library boasts a broad collection of books, CDs, DVDs, audio books, sheet music and magazines, as well as offering courses, free workshops, quiet study areas, music practice areas, and much more.

More than a library

Centre Céramique is much more than just a library. It is a beautifully designed meeting space where exhibitions are held, and concerts, performances and debates are organized. The big entrancehall is the main space watched over by the famous dolphin: a work by Italian artist Marcello Chiarenza. At the second floor a suprisingly and funnily conceived childrens playbrary is situated: a playgrond and library in one. Your children can play and read there and childrens reading hours are held. You can enjoy a marvellous artwork of Stang there, or go to the Atelier to participate in the workshops that are organized for children als well als grown ups.
In the souterrain the Maastricht music school KUMA has her rehearsal spaces, practice rooms and a stage for concerts. For information about past, current and future exhibitions click here.

Cultural Heritage

Various municipal collections are maintained at Centre Céramique, such as ceramics collections from Sphinx, Société Ceramique and Mosa, as well as archaeological and glass collections from Limburg and Maastricht. At the Maastricht Museum, you’ll discover Maastricht’s history. The timeline of the permanent collection takes you through four major themes characterising the city’s history, from prehistoric times to industrial centre. We also tell the hidden stories of Maastricht in the form of surprising temporary exhibitions. Pieces from the collections can also be viewed on loan in exhibitions elsewhere and via the Centre Céramique and the Province of Limburg digital heritage catalogues. For more information about the cultural heritage collections click here.

Centre Céramique and Maastricht Natural History Museum operate as one organisation under the governance of Maastricht Council.

Taalcafé: Learn how to speak Dutch for free

We know it can be difficult to master a new language. That's why we host regular 'Taalcafés', where people who have little to no experience with the Dutch language, practice together. With a cup of coffee or tea, we read articles or small snippets of text together. There's time for questions and to get to know each other. Taalcafé is free.

Check our calendar for the next session of Taalcafé. You are welcome to participate, there is no need to sign up.
